Latin ban in Great Britain

The councils who ban Latin words because they are 'elitist and discriminatory' and confuse immigrants, by Emily Andrews of the Daily Mail

Classics scholars have accused councils of 'ethnic cleansing' after they banned staff from using Latin words.

The local authorities claim the terms are elitist and discriminatory, and have ordered employees to use often-wordier alternatives in documents or when speaking to the public.

Bournemouth Council, which has the Latin motto Pulchritudo et Salubritas - beauty and health - has listed 19 terms it no longer considers acceptable for use. They include ad hoc, bona fide, status quo, vice versa and even via.

Its list of alternatives includes 'for this special purpose', in place of ad hoc and 'existing condition' or 'state of things', instead of status quo.

Mary Beard, a Cambridge professor of classics, said: 'This is absolutely bonkers and the linguistic equivalent of ethnic cleansing. 'English is and always has been a language full of foreign words. It has never been an ethnically pure language.'

Dr Peter Jones, co-founder of the charity Friends of Classics, said: 'This sort of thing sends out the message that language is about nothing more than the communication of very basic information in the manner of a railway timetable. But it is about much more than that. The great strength of English is that it has a massive infusion of Latin.

'We have a very rich lexicon with almost two sets of words for everything. To try to wipe out the richness does a great disservice to the language. It demeans it. I am all for immigrants raising their sights not lowering them. Plain English and Latin phrasing are not diametrically opposed concepts.'

Harry Mount, author of the best-selling book Amo, Amos, Amat and All That, a light-hearted guide to the language, said, 'Latin words and phrases can often sum up thoughts and ideas more often than the alternatives which are put forward.

'They are tremendously useful, quicker and nicer sounding. They are also English words. You will find etc or et cetera in an English dictionary.'

However, the Plain English Campaign congratulated the councils for introducing the bans. Marie Clair, its spokesman, said, 'If you look at the diversity of all our communities you have got people for whom English is a second language. They might mistake eg for egg and little things like that can confuse people. At the same time it is important to remember that the national literacy level is about 12 years old and the vast majority of people hardly ever use these terms. It is far better to use words people understand.'

Of other local authorities to prohibit the use of Latin, Salisbury has asked staff to avoid the phrases ad hoc, ergo and QED (quod erat demonstrandum), while Fife has banned ad hoc as well as ex officio.

Two Things Conservatives Need

1st, to realize that the democratic, egalitarian nightmare all around them is, largely, their own creation. As the French genius Tocqueville observed 150 years ago, "Americans are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom." Only when they realize their own folly -- the deeply held but erroneous belief that everyone is the same -- will they be able to regain control of themselves and their country.

2nd, conservatives need to take back the liberal arts -- grammar, logic, rhetoric, great books, Latin and Greek, and all of that. They especially need to learn to tell a good story, to relearn the art of rhetoric. In this age of mass info-tainment, conservatives are so predictably modern and boring; they have no depth and their opinions are jerked higgledy-piggledy everyday by the likes of Limbaugh, Insanity, and Savage-Weiner. As a bonus, if conservatives took back the liberal arts, they would discover that they were also capturing the schools and the media as well without any added effort. A win-win for everyone.

Fatherhood and Democracy

Laura Wood writes:

The ideal citizen in any high-functioning democracy is the father. He is more important politically than the mother; more important than the young man without children or the single woman; more important as a type than even the property owner. If I were to build an infant republic, I would limit the franchise to all fathers, of whatever race or creed, who were also property owners.

There may be great statesmen or thinkers who have no children, men such as Alexis de Tocqueville who possess vision and insight. There may be celibate spiritual leaders and occasionally a great woman leader. But, it is the ordinary father who is the human cell of democracy, without whom it cannot prosper over the long term.

In the father, the impersonal and personal, the abstract and concrete, the public and private are more likely to exist in the sort of harmony that makes for good political judgment. By father, I don’t mean any man who has biologically reproduced, but the man who takes part in rearing his children and has an active bond with them, whether they are young or adults. The man who never sees his children, has no interest in them, or only supplies compulsory financial support does not meet this definition.

For a woman, the world is too personal and parochial; she seeks security first. For the man without children, the future is sterile; even property or personal wealth will not make him care for those who will live many decades from now. The father is more apt to possess both public-spiritedness and loyalty, dispassion and compassion.

Patriarchy is often misunderstod. Too often it conjures images of despotic chiefs or overlords. A democratic patriarchy is the rule of ordinary fathers. As Pericles said in his famous funeral oration:

… for never can a fair or just policy be expected of the citizen who does not, like his fellows, bring to the decision the interests and apprehensions of a father.

Bene dictum, except for the democracy term. A proper patriarchal republic as Laura so sensibly advocates would be more aristocratic than democratic. Democracy is the enemy of aristos. The illusion of its benefits comes from the safety-minded. The very word promotes mediocrity and group-think over the aristocratic pursuit of excellence and the risk of failure.

Women of course play important roles in the maintenance of a healthy aristocracy, but "behind the scenes," as informal yet powerful social and cultural supporters and critics, nurturers of the patriarchs and of healthy families and communities, and upholders and examples of virtue.

It's a reciprocal arrangement. Virtuous women give good men something worth fighting for, something to protect, something to strive for, to better themselves for. Virtuous men arouse in women the desire to be faithful and supportive lovers, to have children, and to keep a more healthy, happy home.

Hannukah: A Nonsensical Talmudic Holiday

Hannukah is a typical rabbinic charade. It takes the Biblical story of the Maccabees and embroiders it with fantasy. After their victory in 165 B.C., the Jews retook control of the remains of the temple, but it had been defiled. They wanted to rekindle its eternal flame, but they found only one small flask of consecrated oil. According to the Talmud, that small supply, enough for only one day, miraculously lasted for eight, which gave the Jews time to prepare new oil. And which gave the world Hanukkah, meaning "dedication" or "consecration" in Hebrew.

There is no oil that lasted eight days in the Biblical text. This story first appeared in the Talmud, which was concocted by rabbis who lived in Babylon after the destruction of the Temple.

The nonsensical miracle of the oil hoax has led to the rabbinic custom of eating foods fried in oil for Hanukkah. In the United States, the most popular is latkes, (potato pancakes).

The pagan/Babylonian root of Hannukah can be glimpsed in the fact that during Hannukah Talmudic children play a gambling game with a dreidel, a spinning top. Each side has a Hebrew letter. In most places, the letters spell "A Great Miracle Happened There."

In San Francisco for several years a huge Hannukah menorah was displayed in Union Square while the square had no Christian Nativity scene.

Traditionally in Judaism, Hannukah was a very minor observance. The contemporary emphasis on Hannukah was created as a rival to Christmas observances.

In response to my entry last week, Mythos and the aristocratic ideal in the new republic, an anonymous poster offered this promising book, Nobilitas, by Dr. Alexander Jacob.   Gratias, Anonyme, tibi ago.

The only thing that might delay my purchase of the book is the remark from a reviewer that Jacob "leans" toward viewing Christianity as a slave religion. That is of course true now, but it was not always so, especially during its 1000+ year reign over Europe and European colonies. This might just be the reviewer's imagination.

I do agree with CWYN that liberals do not have a death wish, as Malcolm Muggeride and others believe. Liberals are the biggest pansies and self-worshippers one could ever meet. It is why they are so willing to compromise every day in every way with any enemy, and why most of Christianity today has "be nice and capitulate to every alien at all costs no matter what" as its main ethic, over truth and love of ones own people, even over ones own children.

"Conspiracy theorists" were spot on

For years, no one listened. Constantly derided as kooks and nuts by the MSM (especially the neo-cons), their concerns were pooh-poohed away as over-reacting. And all the while the disaster kept building. And now One World Government is riding down hard on us: the bankers want to formally centralize all finances, ushering in total global economic control of everyone on the planet.

"Conservative" TV and radio dismissed Ron Paul as an unrealistic kook; they intentionally ran him out of the presidential race, and would not seriously consider anything he said. Such sites as Infowars, Rense, David Duke, Alan Stang, and NewsWithViews were all considered "conspiracy" websites, not respectable or reliable. But now they have proven more correct than the establishment media. America, are you ready to finally read about the truth? Are you finally ready to wake up and see what could be coming next?

The RedTeam cheerleaders in the media are liars and fools. They tell us the crisis is the fault of -- of course -- those Democrats! They were able to predict nothing of the current situation partly because they didn't and don't know what they are talking about, but mostly because they are just paid whores for the establishment media. Just a few weeks ago, Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, et al. were insisting that the economy was just fine, "don't listen to those lefty scare-mongers!" they shouted. America, get wise: These talking heads are paid to lie to us, to tell us half-truths, to misdirect our attention to secondary issues.

The only people to get it right were Ron Paul and those writers who stuck to the Constitution and criticized fiat money systems. You should be very, very angry. Not only at the international bankers and CEO's, but at their lying RedTeam-BlueTeam prostitutes in the media, both national and local. They should all be tarred and feathered and tied up on the next train to South America.

All you need is love, love, love

Over the years I have watched conservatives lose ground in every important battle they've ever fought, through nothing more than simple compromise and capitulation. They don't want to make waves, you see; for a conservative, being polite is much more important than being right.

James Edwards notes the latest defeat and reproaches the Jew-DayO!-Christians who helped bring it all upon themselves as well as upon the rest of us.

Well, if it’s hate and bigotry to restrict marriage on the basis of race, it’s hate and bigotry to restrict marriage on the basis of gender. You can’t run around for decades praising activist judges for throwing out the historic definition of marriage, invalidating laws based on moral beliefs shared by almost all Americans 50 years ago, and then condemn courts for doing the same thing today.

“Yes, the courts of 50 years ago were right to toss out ancient marriage laws based on the deeply held moral beliefs of nearly 100% of Americans. They were brave, conscientious men who rightly imposed their own views on marriage and invalidated the will of the backward people. But when courts today do the very same thing to us, that’s very wrong.”

That kind of hypocrisy and schizophrenia isn’t much of an argument. It was never going to work. If traditional values folks wanted to keep gay marriage illegal, they should’ve been condemning courts for throwing out the laws that kept interracial marriage illegal.

This project seeks to bring all those interested in the ancient Orthodox life together in a shared dedication to the Old Russian and Ukrainian tradition, national independence and ethnic solidarity apart from and opposed to the global economy and its vacuous neo-liberal ideology.

Here we can see two distinct Christian views about the material world. The first is what one today would call the liberal view. It declares that our physical distinctions are unimportant and may be destroyed for the sake of a "oneness" with God. It seeks a universal peace among the human "race."

The second, the conservative view -- for no one is conservative unless he desires to conserve [Latin: conservare, to save, protect, preserve] himself and his heritage -- acknowledges that we are more than spirit only. That we are not merely bodies with spirits nor spirits with bodies, but are one in body and spirit, and that both are important and should be saved from eternal destruction; both should be preserved and nurtured.

Finally, the American people seem to be pulling their heads out of their behinds. Thank God. Even though I knew and said that most people would not realize what's really going on until the wolf is at their door, it has nevertheless been frustrating for me the last 20 years trying to make people understand. Now the whole pack of Jewish bankers and their lackeys is howling and circling, and RedTeam-BlueTeam fanatics are beginning to see that they themselves have been building up the monster all along.



Now, if we can only get the folk away from that mind-destroying Talmud vision and rescue their children from the government indoctrination facilities (a.k.a. public schools), we'd have a real chance at defeating the Marxists.

The BlueTeam and the RedTeam

Yet Roman chariot racing came as close to anything in the ancient world to the team sports we know today. Each chariot belonged to one of four "factions" or colors, called Blue, Green, Red, and White. ... Spectators were loyal to their colors, and might identify themselves as Blues or Greens depending on what team they rooted for. Literary sources tell us the Romans often seemed to care more about the color or team than about the merits of the individual drivers. But whereas teams in modern American sports generally represent a city or a school, the four chariot factions never stood for anything other than themselves.
