The function, then, of Conservatism was to provide just that element of aggressive nationalism which could win empires, whilst the Liberal hypocrites for whom the Empires were being won could intone the glories of universal brotherhood and occasionally sacrifice a General, like Gordon of Khartoum, just to show that they were internationally minded. These Uriah Heaps, these Victorian Pharisees, whited sepulchres, dead men’s bones, talked glibly about the Parliament of Man and the Federation of the World, because their interest lay not in the building of an Empire but in the acquisition of a larger area for their financial depredations. As good internationalists, they must, of necessity, disavow such an aim; and therefore, they found a most useful weapon in the remnants of the poor old landed gentry who, in their mind’s eye, were still winning the campaigns of the Civil War. Newspapers included in "free press"?

Thomas Jefferson, a radical progressive for his time, was very fond of the idea of educating the populace in order to maintain good government. You may have seen quotes such as these :

"The press [is] the only tocsin of a nation. [When it] is completely silenced... all means of a general effort [are] taken away." -- Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Cooper, Nov 29, 1802. (*) ME 10:341

"The only security of all is in a free press. The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted freely to be expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to. It is necessary, to keep the waters pure." -- Thomas Jefferson to Lafayette, 1823. ME 15:491

"The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves, nor can they be safe with them without information. But perhaps you didn't know that the honorable gentleman from Virginia did not look favorably on the newspapers of his time :

But newspapers were just about the only component of a "free press" in Jefferson's time. It seems he may have been hoping that the peoples would become better educated and that either the newspapers would respond by improving the quality of their reporting, or readers would have learned how to separate the facts from the fiction.

Comforting in a way, is it not, that some things never change? The newspapers today (to include radio and TV news) are still as inaccurate and dishonest as they can be, and readers are still as uninformed and as gullible as ever.

Reminder about Glenn Beck

He's a liar or a complete idiot; likely both. I've been following Ron Paul very closely for over a decade now and he is what he appears to be: an honest, reliable, realistic man who believes (mostly) in what Early Americans always believed in. Beck's criticisms of Paul come from his own twisted, alcohol-damaged brain, or what's left of it.

Yes, Glenn, the airwaves are full of disinformation. That includes your show.

Meine Leute, bitte!, turn off the Talmudvision and read Ron Paul's old articles for yourself (they're all over the Interwebs today, LewRockwell.com has a good collection), go hear him speak, check out his track record. He's not perfect, no one is. But there's none better in D.C. today -- no one else even comes close.

Let Glenn Beck be your litmus test: If you believe him (and those idiots Insanity and O'Rabidly) about Ron Paul being unrealistic, extreme, usw., then you are a typical brainwashed American sheep. You are part of the problem.
